Citrine is basically the same as Amethyst but formed at a higher temperature - over 500 Centigrade. sometimes if the energy is hovering around 500 you can get Amethyst and Citrine forming in the same piece - this is called Ametrine.
Much of the Citrine you see - especially the more vibrant oranges - has been heated artificially - I find it still works but the natural is more mellow.
